Mental Health Care for Anxiety Disorders

This ailment varies in terms of symptoms and severity, which makes it very important that each individual seeking mental health care to treat it is given a specific diagnosis and treatment plan. Every situation demands a different treatment plan, but most often it includes a combination of medication and therapy for best results. Any one of the two can also be considered after proper screening of the symptoms by a mental health professional, but many times, therapy alone also works very well. Therapeutic approaches are particularly helpful because they enable a person to handle it on their own as well, for the future.
Therapy has evolved from psychoanalytic to the newest cognitive-behavioral therapies. The core of all the therapies is to find your triggers, and understand why you feel the way you are feeling when it strikes. Some therapies help in changing your reactions to the triggers, while others help in changing the negative thinking patterns altogether.

Major Causes of Anxious Thoughts

This condition is a response mechanism of your body in stressful times. In this sense, anxiety is basically like the fight, flight, or freeze responses that are rooted in our need for survival. Biological and environmental factors, both determine the occurrence of it in a person. So, we can say that it can be inherited or learned, or both. According to research, anxious parents are more likely to have anxious children. Growing up in a stressful environment can also increase a child’s chances of having it as this reaction becomes a way to anticipate danger.
Unresolved trauma can also be one of the reasons why a person may develop this disorder. An incident of unresolved trauma may leave a person in a heightened sense of physiological arousal, and then similar kinds of experiences can reactive the old trauma. This is mostly the case in PTSD.

The Different Types

Anxiety can be the root cause of serious mental health conditions such as phobias, PTSD, depression, obsessions and compulsions, and panic attacks. Including generalized anxiety disorder, the DSM-5 categorizes the following conditions as anxiety disorders.
  • Separation anxiety: This can specifically be characterized by a strong reluctance to leave one’s home or to live away from one’s parents.
  • Selective mutism: When a person selectively mutes himself completely in some situations, they are said to be going through selective mutism. This can impact the day-to-day functioning in personal and professional settings.
  • Panic Disorder: A panic disorder is diagnosed by recurring panic attacks after facing the triggers. This may also lead to strong physical symptoms of anxiety.
  • Specific phobias: When a person is extremely afraid of an object, situation, or event, that is when they are suffering from phobias. This then makes them keep avoiding the triggers; impairing their ability to function properly.
  • Social anxiety: People suffering from this are afraid of being in social situations. Their fear may be out of proportion to the perceived threat and that makes them avoid social situations.
  • Medication/substance-induced anxiety: This specific condition is diagnosed as worry and stress that seems to have been directly caused by exposure to certain substances, such as caffeine or alcohol. The type may also be caused by medication.

How to Recover From Your Symptoms

In order to recover from your symptoms of this disorder, it is quite important that one is ready to get it treated. Like other health issues, serious anxiety disorders need professional help too. The various ways through which this disorder can be treated are:
MedicationMedications alone may not cure this condition, but they can considerably improve the symptoms. A psychiatrist may prescribe the following medications:
  • Anti-anxiety medications, such as benzodiazepines, are known to decrease anxious feelings, panic, and worry. Although they work quickly, you may even build up a tolerance for them, so they may be less effective over time. Most doctors prescribe an anti-anxiety medication for only a short period of time, and later tapers you off or may even add an anti-depressant to the mix.
  • Antidepressants tweak how our brain uses certain specific chemicals to improve the mood and reduce overall stress. These medicines take some time to work, so one needs to be patient.
  • Beta-blockers, which are usually used for high BP, can help in reducing the physical symptoms you may be experiencing. They are able to relieve rapid heartbeat, shaking, and trembling.

Counseling or psychotherapy Counseling can help one in dealing with the emotional response they are feeling. A mental health expert may talk you through the various strategies to find the perfect route to treatment for your case. The most common approaches include:
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): This is the most common type of psychotherapy that is used to treat this condition. In this therapy, you recognize thought patterns and the behaviors that act as triggers for you. After an initial understanding, you then work on changing those patterns.
  • Exposure therapy: This kind of therapy basically focuses on dealing with the fears head-on, in a controlled manner. The therapist may also use imagery and relaxation exercises with exposure therapy.

Find Help From a Licensed Therapist Who’s Right For You

Usually, mental health experts combine medications and therapy to find the right treatment plan for you. What may work for one person may not work for the other, that is why working on your specific situation will need special attention.
At DocVita, we provide you with options of having direct video calls through Zoom, and Google Meet, so that you are able to talk to your therapist in complete privacy and share all the relevant details to get the best treatment possible, all online.

Schedule a Virtual Psychotherapy Appointment with a Counselor Today

Many treatment options for this condition have counseling as the most important part of the treatment plan. In a controlled setting facilitated by a licensed therapist or counselor, you can share all about your symptoms and the causes that you know. Some of the causes may also be unknown to you, and during the course of the treatment, your therapist will help you find them. In order to create momentum for the treatment to be useful, one may need at least 3-4 sessions with a counselor. In that time, you can easily assess whether that specific therapist is able to help you out or not. In case you are unhappy with the progress, you may book another appointment with some other therapist as well.
At DocVita, our aim is to facilitate the best mental health care, and for that, we are always there to help you out. The counselors with their therapeutic approaches, our customer care executives with all the needed assistance, and all of this through the touch of a few buttons.
