The National Institute of Mental Health and Neuroscience is one of the most well-respected medical institutions in the world. It is the epicenter of mental health education in India, preparing tomorrow's psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, and psychiatric care providers. Thousands of students have gone through this institution, obtaining skills to tackle India's growing mental health crisis. Many graduates have gone on to do amazing things here in India and on an international scale.

The Institute does more than lead the pack in academic pursuits. It's also renowned for its patient care and research. On the care front, it offers high standards of clinical care using cutting-edge techniques and treatments. Meanwhile, the ongoing studies performed there aim to expand our knowledge of mental health and develop therapies to help humanity.

With a reputation as grand as that, it's no surprise that the people of India often seek treatment for their mental health crises at NIMHANS or from a provider affiliated with the Institute. In the past, that meant taking a trip to Bangalore in Karnataka. Unfortunately, journeys like that were out of reach for many patients needing care.

Fortunately, there's no longer a need to visit this institution in person to get the care you need. With DocVita, you can connect with a NIMHANS-affiliated psychiatrist online from the comfort of home. DocVita makes it easy to narrow your search to this institution’s graduates, educators, and researchers, ensuring that you're getting care from some of the best providers in India.

The following providers are available for online consultations, allowing you to get mental health care on your terms no matter where you are in India.

Feeling overwhelmed by stress and yearning for balance? You're not alone. I’ve been there. My own journey in navigating life’s challenges in my personal and family life, as an elementary school educator and mother of two adult daughters, has given me a renewed appreciation for human resilience. Witnessing my own strength and growth throughout ups and downs has fueled my passion to guide others in unlocking their own inner resilience, inspiring me to pursue coaching. Family and relationships are at the core of my values and acts of service is my fulfilling love language. I always thought my emotions were holding me back, but through my journey I’ve learned that instead of viewing emotions as a weakness, embracing theseemotions is a beautiful feeling and learning to regulate them is an ongoing work in progress. I currently hold a dual certification as a Life, Health and Wellness coach from Health Coach Institute which is accredited by ICF (International Coach Federation) the only globally recognized independent program for coaches. I have received formal training in the “Habit Change” transformational coaching method where I have gained a deep understanding of the necessary core competencies needed to help clients reach their goals.
My personalized coaching equips you with practical strategies to overcome obstacles and face adversity with courage and optimism. As your coach, I'm passionate about sharing these insights and equipping you with practical tools to enhance your mental, emotional, and physical well-being, along with your relationships and family life.
My approach is rooted in compassion and personalization. We'll work together to cultivate mindfulness, navigate life's challenges with resilience, and build stronger, more meaningful relationships. Through open dialogue and a supportive environment, we'll identify your strengths, address challenges constructively, and build a foundation that fosters lasting personal growth and happiness. Hi! I'm Mouna, a Counselling Psychologist with an experience of facilitating 4000+ Counselling sessions. Having completed my Masters in Counselling Psychology, with additional training to work with couples and families, I have a strong academic background and I am keen on expanding my horizon as a therapist. In my practice, I work with a diverse range of concerns including grief, relationships (individuals/couples), attachment issues, dysfunctional family dynamics, parenting, trauma, anxiety, depression, substance abuse, academics, career, workplace challenges, self-esteem, emotional regulation, self-development. As a Relational therapist, I strongly believe an individual's relationship with their environment and people around them plays a key role in shaping one's daily experiences. Keeping this in mind, I strive to model a safe and supportive relationship in the therapeutic space. While I am rooted to viewing the individual's narratives through a Systemic lens, I adopt an eclectic approach in my practice. I proactively aim to hold a space that fosters self-awareness and empowers individuals to lead fulfilling lives. Personally, I am intrigued by the unique stories and vast life experiences each of us have. This pushes me to bring my own human-ness to the sessions, thus establishing a profound connection with the client in therapy. If you think this fits in with your needs, I invite you to begin therapy with me :)

Tanisha Goveas

Counselling Psychologist
6 years of experience
Fluent in English, Hindi
In therapy sessions with me, I strive to provide a safe place to express your thoughts, feelings, struggles, and problems. Hi! I’m Tanisha, a mental health practitioner with over half a decade of experience. I am passionate about raising awareness about mental health and the importance of community in our lives. My belief is that therapy is not only a place to share your issues but also a space to identify and build on your strengths, learn problem-solving strategies, develop coping skills, and enhance your emotional capabilities and self-worth. I take an eclectic approach to therapy, using tools from various schools to find what works best for each client's unique life story. These include expressive arts, mindfulness, cognitive therapy, narrative therapy, and person-centered therapy. Each method is tailored to suit your individual needs. Additionally, I am queer-and-trans affirmative, trauma-informed, sex-and-kink-positive, neurodivergent-friendly, and I take an intersectional approach to therapy. In our sessions, your role as a client will be to identify the goals you want to achieve during therapy. Be willing to introspect and communicate any potential obstacles and strengths that may hinder or help you move toward these goals. We will collaboratively work towards achieving the established goals. Moreover, an important part of therapy involves practicing new skills and monitoring certain behaviors and thoughts. Therefore, occasionally, you may be asked to do some “homework” between sessions. While this is not mandatory, it can help you understand how to use the skills you learn and assess their efficacy. My aim is to provide a comfortable and supportive environment conducive to insight, healing, and personal growth. Together, we will work on building a healthier, more fulfilling life.

About NIMHANS

The National Institute of Mental Health officially received university status in 1994. However, the Institute of National Importance has a colorful history that dates back over 150 years.

Initially, it started as the Bangalore Lunatic Asylum in 1847. British medical practitioner Dr. Charles Irwing Smith played a big part in the asylum opening, and it operated differently than establishments of the era. Rather than treating patients poorly, they were allowed to roam freely and even had the opportunity to learn crafts, obtain skills, and participate in domestic work.

By 1925, the asylum donned a new name: Mental Hospital. The Maharaja of Mysore donated roughly 100 acres of land to Mental Hospital. That spurred new construction and the establishment of lush gardens. The healing environment at Mental Hospital was drastically different than other institutions caring for mental health patients, making it a leader in this unique medical field.

By the 1940s, the Health Survey and Development Committee recognized the dire need for trained mental health professionals in India. Thus, the All India Institute of Mental Health was born. The Mental Hospital acted independently from All India, but the two had similar goals.

NIMHANS was declared a Deemed University in 1994. Then, it became an Institute of National Importance in 2012. It's continued to grow and evolve since then. Currently, it has five campuses throughout Bangalore. It's a premier educational, research, and patient care institute that runs autonomously under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
