The National Institute of Mental Health and Neuroscience is one of the most well-respected medical institutions in the world. It is the epicenter of mental health education in India, preparing tomorrow's psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, and psychiatric care providers. Thousands of students have gone through this institution, obtaining skills to tackle India's growing mental health crisis. Many graduates have gone on to do amazing things here in India and on an international scale.

The Institute does more than lead the pack in academic pursuits. It's also renowned for its patient care and research. On the care front, it offers high standards of clinical care using cutting-edge techniques and treatments. Meanwhile, the ongoing studies performed there aim to expand our knowledge of mental health and develop therapies to help humanity.

With a reputation as grand as that, it's no surprise that the people of India often seek treatment for their mental health crises at NIMHANS or from a provider affiliated with the Institute. In the past, that meant taking a trip to Bangalore in Karnataka. Unfortunately, journeys like that were out of reach for many patients needing care.

Fortunately, there's no longer a need to visit this institution in person to get the care you need. With DocVita, you can connect with a NIMHANS-affiliated psychiatrist online from the comfort of home. DocVita makes it easy to narrow your search to this institution’s graduates, educators, and researchers, ensuring that you're getting care from some of the best providers in India.

The following providers are available for online consultations, allowing you to get mental health care on your terms no matter where you are in India.

About NIMHANS

The National Institute of Mental Health officially received university status in 1994. However, the Institute of National Importance has a colorful history that dates back over 150 years.

Initially, it started as the Bangalore Lunatic Asylum in 1847. British medical practitioner Dr. Charles Irwing Smith played a big part in the asylum opening, and it operated differently than establishments of the era. Rather than treating patients poorly, they were allowed to roam freely and even had the opportunity to learn crafts, obtain skills, and participate in domestic work.

By 1925, the asylum donned a new name: Mental Hospital. The Maharaja of Mysore donated roughly 100 acres of land to Mental Hospital. That spurred new construction and the establishment of lush gardens. The healing environment at Mental Hospital was drastically different than other institutions caring for mental health patients, making it a leader in this unique medical field.

By the 1940s, the Health Survey and Development Committee recognized the dire need for trained mental health professionals in India. Thus, the All India Institute of Mental Health was born. The Mental Hospital acted independently from All India, but the two had similar goals.

NIMHANS was declared a Deemed University in 1994. Then, it became an Institute of National Importance in 2012. It's continued to grow and evolve since then. Currently, it has five campuses throughout Bangalore. It's a premier educational, research, and patient care institute that runs autonomously under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
