Its vision is to be one of the top institutions in the nation and the world for advancing mental health, neurosciences, behavioral, and allied sciences. It seeks to do this through multidisciplinary patient care and by creating the next generation of therapists, counselors, and psychologists. Various students have received training and scientific knowledge at this institution. They now work on the front lines to successfully address and tackle India's rising mental health crisis.

Apart from successful training programs and outstanding academic pursuits, IHBAS has the most out-patient count compared to other psychiatric hospitals worldwide. It also provides in-patient services. Its mission is to promote society's mental and neurological health by using innovative, adaptable, ethical, evidence-based, multidisciplinary scientific health care techniques through high-quality research and human resources development in these domains. And to fulfill its objective, the institute adheres to quality assurance, putting into action the accepted human rights standards and various value systems of individuals and populations.

Ever since 1993, it has observed significant progression. It now stands as the benchmark for neuropsychiatric services. That said, it is no wonder people often seek mental health services at IHBAS. Therapy with me focuses on helping people grow, heal, and build resilience in a supportive, nonjudgmental space.  Hello! I'm Athira, an individual and couples therapist. My approach is integrative and centered on the unique needs of my clients. I use evidence-based techniques such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Mindfulness, Trauma-Informed Care, and the Developmental Model of Couples Therapy.  In my journey as a therapist, I've discovered that embracing our humanity is the key to building genuine connections with clients. By being open about my challenges and limitations, I show clients that it's okay to be authentic and imperfect. This shared human experience forms the foundation of our relationship, allowing us to connect on a deeper level to cultivate meaningful change. In my experience of working with couples, my focus is on strengthening their relationships, improving communication, and navigating conflicts. I aim to help partners understand each other's perspectives, rebuild trust, and create meaningful connections that lead to lasting happiness. For individual clients, I provide support on their personal growth journeys. Whether they're dealing with anxiety, trauma, or life transitions, I help them explore their emotions, develop coping strategies, and build the resilience they need to thrive. With my clients, I focus on creating a personalized plan that supports their goals and fosters a collaborative and supportive therapeutic experience.

Tanisha Goveas

Counselling Psychologist
6 years of experience
Fluent in English, Hindi
In therapy sessions with me, I strive to provide a safe place to express your thoughts, feelings, struggles, and problems. Hi! I’m Tanisha, a mental health practitioner with over half a decade of experience. I am passionate about raising awareness about mental health and the importance of community in our lives. My belief is that therapy is not only a place to share your issues but also a space to identify and build on your strengths, learn problem-solving strategies, develop coping skills, and enhance your emotional capabilities and self-worth. I take an eclectic approach to therapy, using tools from various schools to find what works best for each client's unique life story. These include expressive arts, mindfulness, cognitive therapy, narrative therapy, and person-centered therapy. Each method is tailored to suit your individual needs. Additionally, I am queer-and-trans affirmative, trauma-informed, sex-and-kink-positive, neurodivergent-friendly, and I take an intersectional approach to therapy. In our sessions, your role as a client will be to identify the goals you want to achieve during therapy. Be willing to introspect and communicate any potential obstacles and strengths that may hinder or help you move toward these goals. We will collaboratively work towards achieving the established goals. Moreover, an important part of therapy involves practicing new skills and monitoring certain behaviors and thoughts. Therefore, occasionally, you may be asked to do some “homework” between sessions. While this is not mandatory, it can help you understand how to use the skills you learn and assess their efficacy. My aim is to provide a comfortable and supportive environment conducive to insight, healing, and personal growth. Together, we will work on building a healthier, more fulfilling life.

About IHBAS

The history of the Institute of Human Behaviour and Allied Sciences has a lot to tell. In 1966, it was Delhi's only mental hospital, built on the city's outskirts in Shahdara. Back then, it was known as HMD and had hints of a custodial setting. The patients were kept under supervision. They were housed in closed cells with high walls.

However, in compliance with the court directive issued in 1983, which ordered the remodeling of the hospital into a center for training, treatment, and research, 1993 witnessed a change. With its inception in 1993 under the name of IHBAS, the progress made by the institution stands unparalleled.

IHBAS has been achieving new heights through the efforts of director and professor of psychiatry Dr. Rajinder K. Dhamija. The collaborative efforts of the faculty in the fields of neurology, neurosurgery, clinical psychology, microbiology, pathology, etc., have been unprecedented. Exceptional assistant professors, like Dr. Amit Khanna and Dr. Naveen Grover, have fulfilled the institute's aim of providing comprehensive training and research activities of current interest to its students.

Constantly growing and evolving, IHBAS now has five branches spread across the state of Delhi. These are jointly funded by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, and the Government of NCT of Delhi. It has also been identified as a nodal agency for implementing the District Mental Health Programme for the capital. Also, it provides Mobile Mental Health Services for the homeless.
